This paper reports the effect of a modified syringe on children's state anxiety of dental
injection and a review of variables influencing children's dental anxiety including IQ,
sex, achievement, trait anxiety and previous history of dentistry. The participants were
164 children, aged ten-to-twelve years, and were assigned to normal control group,
control group, and experimental group. Children's state anxiety about each of two
different syringes(conventional type and modified type) was measured with pulse rate
and STAIC-I.
The results were as following :
1. Both a pulse rate and STAIC-I were showed the mean difference between groups
used modified type and conventional type of dental anesthetic syringe, although this
difference was not significant statistically.
2. There were weak correlations between pulse rate and STAIC-I, and between
STAIC-I and STAIC-II.
This findings suggest the possibility that the transformation of anesthetic syringe may
reduce children's state anxiety to dental injection, anxiety is a multidimensional
construct, manifest in different ways among different individuals, and that dental fears
are not isolated types of anxieties specific to dental settings.
* STAIC-I : Korean form of the State Anxiety Inventory for Children
** STAIC-II : Korean form of the Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children
